Adding a Recipe Index to Your Blog
Every food blogger should have an easy way for readers to sift through their recipes. A few key elements every food blogger should have is a search box and a recipe index or easy to read archive. All platforms have the search bar which you can add and save to your widget area and the same goes with archives. The recipe index can be a bit trickier since you need to do more work. Before you even begin thinking about any of this you need to have labels set up on your site. Labels help people find whatever they make be looking for easier. Get a pen and paper out and find a great system that works for you. Do you want to categorize by country, dish or ease? That is all up to you.
A few years ago I came across the most amazing automatic updating index tool for Blogger. I used it for years with no issues and then last year Blogger started flagging it and closing the blogs that used it. It was such a hassle since as a designer I had used it on blogs. I am not sure why they started flagging that, but since I have had to look elsewhere for something blogger users can use.
Mary from Bare Feet in The Kitchen has a recipe index that you can use on your own blog. It updates itself and this is the best that I have found for Blogger. You can take a look at her tutorial on how to get it for yourself here.
If you’re a WordPress.org user you have tons of options, but if you’re using the free version yours are limted. For those of you using the free version check out this tutorial on how to set one up over at The Pajama Chef.
On my personal blog, I just use an archive plugin called Smart Archives Reloaded.
